Emotionally, for me, this is an interesting time: loving and not possessing (through choice and not through choice); frightened and free. Now I see the curse behind the Chinese peasant’s remark!
It is a strange, mixed day. I am going to an exhibition showing the experiences and reactions of immigrants to Britain over the past hundred years at the Jewish Museum in Camden, then to Spitalfields Market with my brother.
At least, this is what I will purport to do. It’s hot but grey again in London and a great time to wander down by the river, in some way communing with the presence of the extraordinary collection of “art buildings” along the South Bank: the Globe, the National Theatre, the NFT, the Royal Festival Hall, the Hayward Gallery… really, the South Bank is probably the best place to go when your emotions nosedive and you’re desperate for uplift; and, much more importantly, one of the best reasons to stay in London, or to visit it at all.
